Message From The President
Hey Winters!
My name is Richard Sutton, pronouns they/them, I am a Theatre major, and I am beyond excited to be your President of Winters College Council for the 2025-2026 academic year!
Winters College Council was established in 1967, and since then, the Student Union has been working to welcome, support, and empower all of its constituents. WCC plans and facilitates social events, runs orientation week, oversees business at The Absinthe Pub and Coffee Shop, operates the Winters Free Press, registers constituents in Intramural sports, offers club support and has become a second family to all council members and constituents who have been a part of the community in one way or another.
If you aren't already familiar with our symbol, the rock hand, it’s our emblem for inclusivity and freedom. We strive to be as welcoming and supporting as much as possible for anyone, in any year of study, at any age. Please use the support given to you from the council and get involved as much as you can! I also encourage you to join our team. Keep an eye out for any hiring postings, as well as our elections in the fall and in the spring. All are also welcome to our weekly council meetings.
The transition from highschool to university can be quite intimidating, but from my first moment at York, attending my first day of orientation week with Winters, I felt safe, cared for and felt a sense of belonging. It was a welcoming, accepting and loving community that made any fears I had of this new university life disappear. And I will forever be grateful for all my frosh experiences both as an incoming student and as a leader. Winters gives you a space to meet new people, build friendships and create lifelong memories. You always have a place to be yourself and connect with others.
If you’re joining us this academic year, I'm so excited for you to become a part of this community. Never hesitate to visit us in the council office, at social events or sporting events, or even just say hello around campus. Being part of the Winters community means having lots of friendly faces around campus, so do not be a stranger. Feel free to reach out to me or any other members with any questions or concerns! We are always happy to chat with you.
Whether you are just discovering us or are rejoining, welcome home Winters. <3
