Mission We, the Markham Student Council, hereinafter referred to as the MSC, dedicate ourselves tothe Markham Campus community in the provision of social and academic programs andservices while ensuring we maintain a strong and representative voice within York University.MSC strives to enrich the lives of the Markham Campus student body through social andacademic events. Additionally, the council will continue to guide and assist all affiliated clubsand organizations. Our mission is to act as a unified voice for the student body, advocating for their diverse needsand aspirations while celebrating the unique contributions of every individual. By hostingimpactful events, creating volunteer and job opportunities, and supporting clubs and socialactivities, we aim to represent and meet the needs of our students to the best of our ability. Byhonouring the spirit of collaboration and championing student leadership, the MSC endeavoursto create lasting impacts that shape the future of our campus and its students for generations tocome. The Markham Student Council recognizes that York University’s Markham Campus is situatedon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, andAnishinaabe Peoples — including the Ojibwe Nation, with the Chippewas of Georgina Islandbeing the closest recognized community. These territories are covered by the Williams Treaty(1923), which unjustly stripped Indigenous Peoples of their harvesting rights — a wrong onlypartially addressed in 2018.We acknowledge the devastating impacts of colonialism, and the genocide committed againstIndigenous Peoples — including forced sterilization, family separation, and the horrors ofresidential schools. These harms are not only historical, but ongoing, in the battle seeking thereal truth and true reconciliation. As a student-led organization rooted in advocacy and collaboration, the MSC affirms itsresponsibility to actively listen to, learn from, and support Indigenous voices — and to contributemeaningfully to truth and reconciliation efforts within our campus and beyond.
